in short
Lock the phone from another device first, then change your account password. If you don't expect it back, ask your carrier to suspend the SIM so you aren't charged for calls. Erase it only when it won't come back: erasing can't be undone.
In India you can also ask for the phone to be blocked on Sanchar Saathi (CEIR) — that request has its own page.

Limits: when lock and erase won't work
- The finder must have been set up before the theft: Lost Mode is unavailable if Find My wasn't set up on the iPhone.
- On Android, to lock or erase remotely the phone needs power, mobile data or Wi-Fi, your Google Account, Find Hub turned on and visibility on Google Play.
- An offline iPhone gets the erase the next time it's online; an erased Android can no longer be located.
Scams after a theft
- Apple will never contact you to say your iPhone has been found; never share your passcode, passwords or verification codes with anyone who asks.
Note the IMEI and keep your purchase papers: on an iPhone the IMEI is in your Apple Account under Devices and on the original box.
Questions after a theft
Should I erase the phone right away?
Only when you don't expect to get it back. Erasing can't be undone; an erased Android leaves Find Hub and can't be located, while an iPhone on iOS 15 or later can still be found with Find My after a remote erase. Either way the phone stays locked to you: Activation Lock on iPhone, device protection on Android.
Can I lock an Android phone without signing in?
Yes: go to android.com/lock, enter your phone number, complete the reCaptcha and ask for the lock. With your Google Account you can also use Mark as lost in Find Hub, which locks it with your PIN, pattern or password.
Can I put a message on the lock screen?
Yes. Mark as lost on Android and Lost Mode on iPhone let you show a phone number and a message; on iPhone it appears once the phone is online.
Lock and erase didn't work. Why?
They work only if the finder was set up before the theft: Lost Mode needs Find My set up on the iPhone, and on Android the phone must have power, a connection, your Google Account and Find Hub turned on.
Someone says they found my iPhone. Is it real?
Apple will never contact you to say your iPhone has been found. Never share your passcode, passwords or verification codes with anyone who asks.
My phone was stolen outside India. What can I do?
Lock it with Mark as lost in Find Hub or Mark As Lost in Find My, change your account password, and ask your carrier to suspend service. Whether the phone can be blocked by its IMEI depends on where you live — ask your carrier.
