Three different technologies are sold under one promise. What each one can really do, how accurate it is, and which applies to your situation.

"Enter a number and see the person on a map" is the promise of an entire category of services. Some of it is real, most of it is oversold, and the difference comes down to one question nobody asks first: what exactly is being located — the phone, the SIM, or the account?

What exists: consent-based sharing (exact, needs the other person to agree), operator-side network data (approximate, released to law enforcement), and commercial lookups (approximate, no install needed). Three technologies, sold under one name

The marketing language is identical across the whole category, so it is worth separating what is underneath.

Consent-based GPS. Find My, Google Find My Device, Life360. The device reports its own coordinates to an account. Accuracy is metres. The catch is not technical — someone has to have set it up, on that phone, in advance.

Network-side location. Every phone registers with a cell tower, and the operator knows which one. Accuracy runs from a few hundred metres in a dense city to several kilometres in the countryside — the published figures for GPS itself describe the device, not this. No app is involved and nothing needs installing, because the network already has the data. Access is the constraint: operators release it on a case number.

Commercial lookup services. These sit on top of operator signalling and adjacent data sources. They work from the number alone, return an area rather than a point, and charge per request. Honest ones state a radius; the rest show a pin and let you assume.

What the numbers actually mean

An "accuracy of 10 metres" claim on a service that never touches the device is not a measurement, it is a stock illustration. Two figures are worth knowing when you read them:

  • GPS on the device itself — around 5 metres outdoors, degrading badly indoors and between tall buildings.
  • Network-side positioning — from roughly 150 metres in a dense urban cell to several kilometres where towers are far apart.

There is nothing in between for a number you do not control. A service promising device-grade precision without device access is describing something it cannot do.

The table is deliberately boring, and that is the point: the columns that matter are not "accuracy" but "needs install" and "consent needed". Those two decide whether a tool is usable in your situation at all, and no amount of precision compensates for a method you cannot apply.

Choosing by situation, not by feature list

Your own phone, stolen. Same tools, plus the carrier and a police report. Commercial services add nothing here — you already have the account.

A family member who agreed to share. Life360 or the built-in family sharing. Set it up while everyone is calm, not during an emergency.

A number and no access to the device. This is the only case where commercial lookup services are the answer rather than an upsell. Expect an area, not an address, and expect to pay per request.

How to read a service before paying

Four questions separate the workable from the theatrical:

Does it demand an install on the target device :: If it does, it needs physical access to that phone — which usually means you already have the phone, and the service is redundant. Does it charge per request or per month :: Per-request pricing matches how people actually use these tools. A subscription for a one-off question is a way to bill you in month two. Does it show anything before payment :: Being able to see whether the number is reachable at all, before paying, is the cheapest possible test of whether the service has real data. [[/steps]]

The legal line

Locating your own device is unambiguous. Locating a family member who has agreed is fine, and consent is the operative word — most jurisdictions treat covert tracking of an adult as an offence regardless of the relationship, and regulators have said so in enforcement actions. Locating a stranger's phone is not a grey area anywhere.

This matters practically, not just morally: services that ignore the distinction tend to be the same ones that invent their accuracy figures. Two forms of dishonesty travel together.

What to take away

The category is not fraudulent, but it is sold with the accuracy of one technology and delivered with the accuracy of another. Decide first which of the three you are actually in a position to use — consent, legal process, or commercial lookup — and the choice inside that group becomes straightforward.
